The amount of physical activity that the youth incorporate into their daily activities is minimal and doesn’t meet the national requirements for amount of time a child should be active during the day. Media has influenced the amount of exercise that a child receives in a day. The amount of time that is being used to watch T.V., play video games, on the computer and other sedentary behaviors have inhibited the children from participating in physical activity. The three levels include primary prevention, secondary prevention and tertiary prevention. Primary prevention is defined as finding ways and approaches that can help to prevent the illness or injury from occurring in the first place (Harkness & Demarco, 2012). Secondary prevention occurs when approaches are in place to help the management of the disease or injury once it has occurred. Finally, tertiary prevention occurs when approaches are in place to manage the long-term effects of a disease or condition. In order to make a plan to help reduce childhood obesity in Hispanic families, there needs to be utilization of all three levels of prevention and the web of causation. The Public Health Nurse will meet with administration and nutritional services within the district to implement a healthy food choices that are offered at the school cafeteria for lunch. A variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and good energy food should be offered. Portion control should be followed when offering and serving the students food. Advertisement of the food pyramid on posters to be placed strategically within the cafeteria to remind students of amount of food to be consumed and what food groups to be eating.
Objective 4. The Public Health Nurse along with the school nurse will meet with each class within the school district and teach them how to read food labels. Education on how to read food labels, look for hidden ingredients, and terminology that is used on the food labels that may give misinformation.
