First, Charley has changed physically from the war. Charley is sitting by a river back in his hometown, after war, barely able to walk. “He was tired and broken, walking with a cane and passing blood, and he knew it wouldn’t be too for him” (Chapter 10.) Charley has fought in many battles, and now has injuries in many bones. Before war, Charley is healthy, and has never trained or fought anywhere. After the war, Charley injures a few bones, due to the lack of practice at the camps.

Charley now feels depressed and tries to remember his life before the war. “Even when all his thought came on to being grey and raining, and the parades were done and the dances were done and the killing. . . was at last done, he could remember all the pretty things” (Chapter 10.) Charley is sad, but tries to feel better by remembering his old life. Before the war, Charley is joyful and eager to join war. Now, even though Charley has become depressed from all the shooting, he can still remember all the happy moments in life, even though it is difficult.
Charley is an excited and happy 15-year-old boy before the war begins. Afterwards, Charley becomes weaker, contemplates suicide, and suffers depression. In the same way, hundreds of people experience the same feelings after traumatic events, but most can’t handle it and end their life before anyone can stop
