Merriam-Webster defines management as:

•the act or skill of controlling and making decisions about a business, department, sports team, etc.

•the people who make decisions about a business, department, sports team, etc.

•the act or process of deciding how to use something.

Merriam-Webster also define leadership as:

•the power or ability to lead other people.

•capacity to lead.

In my opinion, leadership and management, while different, are both necessary qualities of a Regional Manager. To be a successful OLCC Regional Manager a person will need to be both a great manager and a great leader.

I practice management that is flexible and may be different for each person or situation but may change as I receive feedback from those involved and as the task evolves. Some employees or situations flourish better with a more Authoritarian (power is in the hand of one person and it cannot be questioned) management/leadership style and other staff or situations will flourish working under the opposite, a Chaotic (employees perform to their full potential when they are given a free hand) management/leadership style.

My default management/leadership style falls somewhere between these two. I believe in explaining to employees what my expectations are, what the boundaries are, and then letting them be responsible for their own success. I know each employee may handle a situation differently but still be successful. I believe a manager/leader will give each…
