Some of his observations enlightened me to degree. In the opening line of this document the professor states that a gentleman has purchased a female slave in order to prevent her separation from her husband. This exact point confused me because when I think of slave traders I don't think of them necessarily as very humane in the sense of them caring about whether a slave is married or in love. This was the first time that I have read a document where the slave trader is being humane and actually putting forth the effort to keep these two slaves together.
