Over the course of the past few months, there have been talks about extending the limit for LDP party president. It has been a constant issue addressed almost every week on most media outlets since September. The formal discussion about changing the rules from two consecutive three-year terms is left up to the decision of the party, which as of October 25th, came to the consensus that it will in fact, revise its rules to extend the maximum allotted time in office. The decision the party made is an internal matter of the party that will have effects, which will impact many, far beyond the LDP. The first proposals allow the party president to be elected for three consecutive three-year terms, which is a total of nine years. The second abolishes any and all restrictions on said number of terms. This matter is very interesting, since, the LDP’s presidential term(s) are directly associated with the prime minister 's tenure.
Three of the many articles, which have informed the public of the situation have very different takes on the affair. The first by The Japan News titled, “LDP on track to give president longer term” from October 7th, leaves a lot to be questioned. Although, The Yomiuri Shimbun covers the topic extensively, stating all the known facts and bringing forth interesting points. It doesn’t address head on whether the extension of the presidential term is a ploy to keep Abe in power longer or just a more beneficiary policy. It does, however, state at the beginning…
