Denby asks “Do genre films really reflect reality?” while discussing cliche teen movies. The answer is no but that question also defines the reason for its popularity. People who are looking for an escape from “other teens...and the social system” or maybe life in general want that cliche so that they can ignore reality. After 9/11 people were shocked and that shock led to patriotic songs that matched the mood of America but that is not that case now. We still remember that day but it’s not the backbone of songs. Between 9/11 and now society decided that they did not want to wallow around in sadness and wanted to leave the reality of a possible threat. “So what does it say that we go from blessing America to wallowing in the great depression to feeling invincible but desperately in need of escape?” (Wiltz) It says that society needs to be distracted from the bad happenings in life and pop culture responds to that. When you think about about it most sad movies contain romance, people rarely go see a sad movie without romance. What would be the point? The feminist movement has also increased in strength and many women artists go on to support it. Rihanna sings about working in the dirt while Beyonce sings about girls running the world. Pretty much every female artist, especially R&B artist, has some empowering song to increase self-esteem. That’s what society wants, society wants to be accepted for who it is. Furthermore, society believes in making an effort in life to achieve your goals, “no pain no gain”. Movies like Soul Surfer that shows a girl who was beaten down stand back up or movies like Whiplash where the protagonist almost reaches insanity to get to the top reflect this.
