The Pop Culture Scare
The media and pop culture have influenced society in more ways than we know. Everything that society does, thinks, feels, or believes, comes from social media or a standard of pop culture. For example, the “YOLO”, “haters gonna hate”, or any other of the ridiculous basic sayings portrayed by the media or news, are slowly consuming young people’s minds and actions. The worldly things in the media are influencing young people negatively by inequality between the sexes, loss of creativity and originality, and decreases trust in the media world. The world as we know it, is being influenced by pop culture and the media, and it is doing more harm than good.
In the essay “Still Missing: Women in the Media”, by Megan Tady, she discusses the gender issues and inequality in the media news world. Tady talks about the way men have a greater voice and opinion in the media, and decide “how to represent and portray our population in the media” (Tady, 577). Furthermore, “their choices often end up degrading, stereotyping, or ignoring women” (Tady, 577). Likewise, Tady talks about how she is not blaming men nor saying that

Pop culture is a part of history, and has aided in communication and provided numerous advances in the social world. Television provides ways to warn people prior to a disaster, and keep people knowledgeable to what is happening around the world. Social media allows families and friends to enjoy their free time, and connect with each other when they live in different places. As you can see, the media provides many benefits to society, but often times people abuse it. People spend too much time staring at a television for hours, or constantly checking twitter to see what their favorite celebrity posted. Furthermore, people abuse their privilege to the media world, instead of enjoying the simplicities and little things in life away from the

The mass media plays a very important role in the creation and perpetuating of gender stereotypes and roles. Representation of women in British media has always depended on a variety of factors such as political situation in the country, social opinions and other things. In this essay I would like to describe and analyse how women’s representation has been changed in Britain between 1918 and 1968. Women equality in the media has increased over time, but it is still not equal to the men's. Women are seen as “Just women” and the media is inferring that women are not capable of the same things that men are. Women are put in a box that labels them in negative ways. In my research paper I will be explaining the inequality for women in the news, sports journalism and also entertainment. News journalism is a demanding field for both women and men, so why is it when you turn on your daily news you're less likely to see a women representation?…

This is because more than sixty percent of reporters are male. The author then discusses that males in journalism tend to “be highest in prestige or ‘hard’ topics.” Contrastingly, for women in the media, are said to report “in ‘soft’ subjects”. Mundy lists the publications who let men dominate their opinion columnists. She then states that she does not know why the disparity of women in the media exists, and that newsrooms attempt to recruit women to pursue journalism,…

Stereotyping the “jocks” from the “nerds,” people tend to believe that intelligent people are more physically frail than others. Being strong or intelligent is not an “either or” phenomenon. Anyone can choose to become smarter and stronger with effort. This myth comes from a common trend seen in society where many famously intelligent people tend to have a smaller physique and some well-known athletes having a lower IQ. However, there are many factors that play into this assumption.…

In a world where technology is constantly advancing, it is impossible to escape the media. David Grazian states this idea by stating that we are not as immune from pop culture as we would like to believe we are (Grazian, 2010). The media is constantly influencing society in ways that most people are unaware of. Due to the huge impact of media on culture, it is possible to examine it from the critical perspective in terms of the consequences that arise (Grazian, 2010). Using the film, Merchants of Cool, can aid in understanding the current state of the United States due to the strength that bonds media and culture together.…

The media act as a vehicle to promote countless messages and ideologies everyday, but in a media world where patriarchal values still reign high, there is a major issue of sexism at hand. Women are under represented in virtually all aspects of media, news media specifically. In a 2015 report on the status of women in the media, it is stated that “in evening broadcast news, women are on-camera 32 percent of the time; in print news, women report 37 percent of the stories; on the Internet, women write 42 percent of the news; and on the wires, women garner only 38 percent of the bylines” (“Report on the Status of Women in U.S. Media 2015”). This under representation in news media is not only a problem of outright sexism but also one of ‘un-objectivity’,…

It may not come as any surprise that society is greatly influenced by present-day social media such as Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Celebrities have mass amounts of followers; they put their daily lives on the Internet for us to all see, and we all catch onto the latest fads. This is not a new concept, however. For as long as one could imagine, that is how long members of society have been influenced by pop culture. Through the examination of three approaches, the Functionalist, the Critical, and the Interaction, we are able to further understand how pop culture and mass media affects each and every one of us.…
