Chain of Command My company has a very clear and organized chain of command. It is not difficult to determine how the chain of command works. Every employee is expected to follow this command. Overlooking that chain of command often leads to conflict and workplace stress. According to Robbins & Judge, the chain of command “is an unbroken line of authority that extends from the top of the organization to the lowest echelon and clarifies who reports to whom” (2002, p 522). Robbins & Judge further goes on to discuss the importance of unity of command and authority in the discussion of chain of command.
Circumventing the Chain of Command and Workplace Conflict
In my professional experience I have seen a lot conflicts arisen due to a break in the chain of command. In as much as my company’s chain of command is clear, it is sometimes very frustrating going up the ladder of command with problems. Your immediate supervisor is your first line of command. Conflict is defined as “the process that begins when one party perceives that another party has negatively affected, or is about to negatively affect, something that he first party cares about” (Robbins & Judge, 2002, p 485). Conflict in itself is not a bad thing. However, is it how we resolve it after it arises. Going above the chain of command has brought conflict at my workplace. You are seen as the betrayer.
