Causes Of Workplace Violence

Introduction This paper discusses the causes, effects, prevention, and recommendation for workplace violence. “Workplace violence is any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. It ranges from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and even homicide.” (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, n.d.) Workplace violence has accounted for many violent encounters faced in the business world. This can be led on by numerous factors. These causes include workplace factors and psychological factors. Workplace factors generally incorporates work-related stress, problems with fellow employees, and problems with employers. When an employee faces problems with work-related stress, employees often appear unhappy and aggravated due to the fact that the problem is not being looked at or not taken seriously by a supervisor. Whenever this occurs, employees are less driven to report any incident they may face on the job that causes them to develop stress, meanwhile other employees become vulnerable to cause other problems. When these stress issues begin to expand, there is a greater chance for other employees to develop similar feelings. Oftentimes, employees are not able to cope with these problems on their own, and there may not be other measures looked at or taken into consideration to dissolve these issues. Employers are oftentimes more vigilant of current and future employees. Due to the fact that workplace violence can cost a business or organization a lot of money, employers want to ensure that there is a less likelihood of workplace violence reoccurring. Employers are not the only people in a business or organization that is affected by workplace violence. Typically, employees are affected more when considering workplace violence. Commonly, it is known for employees to develop conflicts and altercations among other employees, the chances of this reoccurring can lead to psychological problems such as stress, anxiety, and also fear. These factors can greatly impact the performance level of employees which causes business and organizations to lose consumers and money. Employees also face violence from consumers. Consumers may at times become violent with employees whenever there is a disagreement, conflict, or misunderstanding, especially in service industries where consumers and employees directly face each other. This can be dangerous as individuals have the capability to do anything whenever they do not feel satisfied when paying for a service or product.
