What is one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of five? Drowning? SIDS? Although these are both great answers I’m actually referring to Pneumonia which accounts for 15% of all deaths in children under 5 years old. Pneumonia actually claimed the lives of an estimated 922,000 children in 2015. Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lungs which primarily affects the microscopic air sacs known as the alveoli. The condition will inflame the air sacs in the lungs and possibly lead to them being filled with fluid. There are a multiple of organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi that can cause pneumonia. The most commonly listed organisms are pneumococcus, streptococcus and staphylococcus. Pneumococcal pneumonia is one of the most common types of pneumonia and it’s caused by Streptococcus pneumonia which can be contracted with airborne droplets when someone is coughing or sneezing. It can also be exchanged through close contact with someone who already has it and breathing in certain bacteria from your nose and throat into your lungs which typically happens during sleep. The most common contraction of pneumonia is during or sometimes after a viral upper respiratory infection, such as a cold or the influenza virus.Another common and sometimes deadly form of pneumonia is Mycoplasma pneumonia also known as “walking pneumonia.”
