People from every time period who were anybody, often cared about someone’s outward appearance. This façade of an individual is the first thing anyone noticed about them and most often the first area they were judged on. Castiglione wants the perfect gentleman to have a very manly and well manicured exterior, but at the same time he should not be overly feminine. Someone of medium build and not overly vast in stature. This well proportioned build is very important for his soldierly duties, and his participation in manly events. This is in great contrast to individuals from prior history in that they were overly done-up. These persons often wore wigs and makeup and were commonly portrayed in a womanly aspect. This appearance changed drastically as time wore on. Men became more mainly so to speak. This impression is not frequently as important in the early days of civilization, unless they were from an aristocratic background, but this became increasingly more common as the concept of individuality progressed. Castiglione’s character also needed to dress to impress, but not like men of past generations. He needed to dress as a younger and more capable individual. The courtier needs to be every efficient in decision making when it comes to battle and the presence of his subordinates, but not overly ostentatious. Castiglione wants his courtier to obey his commander, but be able to make his own decisions based off his own intelligence. This individual needs to know about the great commanders from the past such as, Caesar, Scipio Africanus, and Alexander, who fought for glory and their names to revered for all time. However, the courtier should not seek the praise that these men sought. He should be more modest when it comes to his military exploits or he will not be remembered as a gentleman. This aspect of Castiglione’s courtier is definitely looked at different as the progression of individualism comes to light. The days of fighting for glory and honor have long passed. Great military commander from more modern times fight for their own personal advance more so than for the honor of a gentleman. Honor in battle during ancient times are what most commanders sought. Castiglione doe not want his courtier to be all about his own benefit, he wants him to serve his prince. When he excels in battle, it needs to be in the face of his commander.
