Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones, but Do Words Hurt? Parents get upset when they see their children crying over bullying, so they tell them "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt," but is this old nursery rhyme true? The words of bullying do hurt, and the proof of words hurting are children. " Kids who are bullied are more likely to experience: Depression and anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy" (Effects of Bullying 1). Not only do parents have to worry about bullying, but they also have to worry about cyberbullying. Cyberbullying, which is bullying on any type of social media, can happen everywhere and anywhere and the effects are the same as school yard bullying. Words so hurt and can cause mental illnesses like depression and anxiety. Even though words do not have the capability to break bones, they do have the capability to break one 's confidence and self esteem. Many people wonder how something abstract could hurt people, because they learn in school that abstract words are only thoughts or ideas. Even though words are abstract and cannot leave cuts and bruises like sticks and stones, words can leave emotional cuts and bruising which can be more painful.
