The men of Perugia had greater numbers, and captured and killed many Assisians, but Francis with his expensive armour and aristocratic clothes was thought to be eligible for a ransom. Andrea Pozzo’s masterpiece of religious art, Triumph and Apotheosis of Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1691-1694), is a large ceiling fresco that depicts numerous religious figures, including the Holy Trinity and Saint Ignatius. Pozzo utilizes foreshortening, an optical illusion technique, that causes an object or distance to appear shorter or closer than it actually is. This technique is what gives the piece depth and makes the audience think that they are looking into the Heavens themselves. Pozzo managed to turn a flat surface into a round dome and impart a sense of physical, and therefore mental, order. This type of foreshortening is not an easy concept to display.…

Closer examination of the weave of Antony’s thoughts and teachings finds the thread often on the surface. Finally, the use…

She was not taught to read or write, but her pious mother instilled in her a deep love for the Catholic Church and its teachings. A peace treaty in 1420 disinherited the French crown prince, Charles of Valois, amid accusations of his illegitimacy, and King Henry V was made ruler of both England and France. His son, Henry VI, succeeded him in 1422.…
