Saint Michael the Archangel is the largest single piece of Byzantine statue made of ivory that still stands. This art piece was made during the 6th century, in Constantinople. This piece of art is classical style, it has a large panel which is interesting because most panels are originally small. The ivory is about 18in., this art piece has many details lots of architecture elements. The angel is very large and takes up all of the star case, it has a hierarchy scale so that his size is able to match divine nature. The details that is carved into this art piece shows the delicacy that was put into. Sant’ Apollinaire was the other piece I decided to pick and compare. The Saint Michael is made from ivory. It is sculptured with many carved details engraved into the hair and wings. This particular piece of art can be known as formalism because of its shapes in the art, also because of how its formed and its style. It is very visual and its elements like its texture line and shape tell a historical context of this piece. This piece is very big compared to other Byzantine ivory panels. This piece shows a combination of pagan and Christian traditions, its originally part of a diptych. This architecture recalls the apse of a church. The angels face and his hair in the ivory reminiscent of the classical style. The other piece I choose was Sant’Apollinare, which was the first bishop of Ravenna. His visual portrait had a golden halo in which indicates that he is holy or sacred. This portrait has a well-proportioned space. Its feature has a nave that can be twice the width of the isles. There is a flight of twelve steps that leads up to the apse. St. Apollinare is in the center of the building to show his importance. The landscape shows a similarity of how we can define paradise with the lower region of the apse with a meadow that is filled with trees, bushes, flowers, birds, and lambs. Above the painting is the image of god in which can indicate how God is protecting him and all he created. The portrait of St. Apollinare is realism. The elements of the landscape
