Brian Blake Character Analysis Essay

Brian Blake is the son of Ed and Rose Blake. Before the outbreak Brian was a good man who grew up in Waynesboro, Georgia with his loving family. Brian was described as sickly and frail. He is very intelligent and has an older brother named Philip who protected him and ensured his safety but also was very cruel. His brother’s name was Philip Blake. Philip looks after his brother but only because he feels obligated too. Brian ends up causing Philip to loose his daughter in a dangerous shoot out. Brian became involved with a women named April Chalmers who allows him and his group to take refugee in her apartment along with her group. Brian becomes overwhelmed one night and ends up raping April in the heat of the moment. Brian’s group gets kicked out due to his actions. As a means of protection he took up the entire identity of his cruel brother because he knew that he was not strong enough to fend for himself, so he reinvented himself for his own survival. This sense of lost identity caused him to loose all former characteristics of Brian and to take up all the cruel and merciless ones of Philip. All of his motivations and tyrant like philosophy comes from his brother’s cold and unforgiving ways. Another reason why Brian took his brother’s identity is because he was tired of being weak and dominated which is why when he comes Philip he is channeling his inner aggression and resentment for all of those years of submissive behavior. Psychologically he is very unstable as he becomes mad with power and his obsession with control causes him to become held captive at the mercy of Michonne. His identity also causes him to make ill advised choices that seem to only benefit himself such as manipulating truth or constant lying. This emergence of a Philip is what will lead Brian to his ultimate demise as he becomes mad with power as he looses his own
