Women are portrayed as the stereotype of someone who should not be confident, no control of power, or someone who should be at home. On the other hand, hip-hop music is categorized where it should only involve sexualized women, cars, and money. Ultimately, the following shows how the media is heavily influenced on today's modern…
In Brooke Gladstone’s graphic novel entitled “The Influencing Machine”, journalistic media is evaluated throughout its evolution. Due to the complexity of the subject, many different qualities of the media are explored throughout the novel; however, four main, controversial themes are always evident, and those four are the purpose, necessity, honesty, and reliability of journalistic media. After reading Gladstone’s informative graphic novel, enough information can be acquired in order to form valid, cohesive opinions regarding different characteristics of journalistic media. Throughout history, all prosperous phenomena share one commonality: they’re purposeful.…
The underrepresentation of women in the media shows the limitation of freedom they are allowed to get, it targets the entire population of females, and there is no direct cause of this oppression. In this case, men are the ones who receive a group-based benefit because it makes them feel “good” or superior. According to Alison Bailey, “privileges are unearned advantages that are conferred systematically due to one’s being identified as a member of a particular social group” (Privilege, Slide #9). Since men have always been viewed as a dominant figure, they are the ones who benefit from the oppression of women in the media. The negative of a microscopic perspective when it comes to oppression and privilege is that a microscopic view tries to directly find the individual causing the harm whereas oppression and privilege are systematic; there is no single direct cause.…
In “Matt Lauer Fields Storm of Criticism Over Clinton-Trump Forum,” Michael Grynbaum brings to attention the subject of sexism and how it’s affecting this election. Specifically, Grynbaum addresses the recent forum held this week and overseen by Matt Lauer. Lauer has faced immense criticism from all fronts due to his apparent poor handling of both the democratic and republican candidate. The critique of Lauer centers mainly around his interview of Hillary Clinton.…
The inequality that has always existed within the workplace began to be addressed, and women’s liberation throughout all races began to take hold. The largest feats of feminism were displayed in the media and society as women were allowed to compete in sports and other male dominated activities and professions. Then, in the 80’s and 90’s, these liberal ideas were heavily rejected and seen as a negative agenda against the American Dream. Then, by the 1990s, many television conglomerations began to control what was displayed in the media, and focused on conservative perspectives and what extreme displays would garner the most attention, most of which displayed women in sexual, sexist, and derogatory perspectives. Traditional gender messages are heavily enforced, emphasising that men should be the strong breadwinners who need to prove their manliness, while women must remain non- threatening, delicate, and an object of desire.…
This is because more than sixty percent of reporters are male. The author then discusses that males in journalism tend to “be highest in prestige or ‘hard’ topics.” Contrastingly, for women in the media, are said to report “in ‘soft’ subjects”. Mundy lists the publications who let men dominate their opinion columnists. She then states that she does not know why the disparity of women in the media exists, and that newsrooms attempt to recruit women to pursue journalism,…

The amount of exposure a single individual has on a daily basis is astonishing. However, what is of more importance is the consequences that arise based on the relationship between society and media. Hegemony is a huge aspect of the media since it contributes to norms, social inequality, and social control. The issue is that only one group benefits from this, while other suffer while attempting to achieve an unattainable ideal.…
The emergence of the post-network era along with the rise of convergence in the media industry has brought along a series of changes in the way society views, produces, and critically engages with media. The effects of these changes have been argued to be both positive and negative. One effect I see from these changes is the increase of representation and empowerment of oppressed and minority groups, including women. The increase of content targeted at niche audiences, edgy content that pushes boundaries, and legitimation of media content are changes brought on by the post-network era that bring representation and power to women.…
Critical rhetorical studies of mass media are crucial in terms of both critiquing social norms and viewing media as a critique of modern society. By its nature mass media has typically been part of big business and therefor part of the establishment; in general we should expect that its rhetorical message (programing) would reflect the values and views of the establishment which is white straight male and essentially patriarchal. The liberal feminist criticism while useful in critiquing media up until the 1980’s loses much of its value as its influence on the media has resulted in more programing that reflect the values of liberal feminism. For example Kate and Ali and Murphy Brown were both shows about independent women recreating family in a man’s world without traditional male support.…
As stated by Angela Mcrobbie, there are a certain programmes like Made on MTV or What Not To Wear on BBC, that help women transform themselves and their lifestyle according to experts advisements. There’s a concept of shaming the middle-class values and admiring to join the manners and lifestyle of the upper class. The contemporary media can as well be considered to be in control and hence a panopticon. Michel Foucault defines the panopticon as a highly efficient instrument of surveillance and control that is present in all modern institutions (Foucault, 1997, pp. 279-315).…
Explain the role that neoliberalism plays in international communications. According to the lesson on neoliberalism, David Harvey defines neoliberalism as a theory of political economic practice that asserts the best way for societies to advance is by opening up their markets to free trade and converting their government systems to democracies. In other words, based on the lessons, neoliberalism is based on the idea that a free market is the most effective route to economic success. A free market economy has affected countries not only economically, but socio-politically as well.…
In 1976, Sidney Lumet directed the film Network that was about a news anchorman named Howard Beale, who had been in the same industry for eleven years working at The Union Broadcasting System (UBS). Beale was known for being “the mandarin of television” throughout the 1960s with outstanding ratings. However, his career soon came to a downfall in the late 1960s. In 1969, Beale’s ratings began to drop. Soon after that, he lost his wife and fell into a deep depression and started to drink excessively.…
The question is, “How is ‘masculinity’ and ‘femininity’ defined in the mass media?” Such a broad question with so many answers depending on the type of media you may be looking at. Not all people think alike but the media persuades us on what to think about certain issues. Many types of mass media can have an impact on us such as lyrics to a song, music videos, or magazine ads. Through my essay I will describe the content analysis I have performed dealing with the lyrics of a song.…
The presence of Mass media in our modern society is very strong, where the access to technology has become available for almost all parts of the world that enables them to stay connected with whatever is happing around them.
