In conclusion, Bennett wraps Hip Hop up in metaphors and imagery and gives it to his readers to interpret. Is Hip Hop good or evil? As it changes we can only hope it will choose a side that perhaps does not encourage the dropouts and gang bangers, but then Hip Hop isn't that, Hip Hop. It is a culture and represents such a huge margin of our population, perhaps it can be used as a teaching tool, and that of a learning tool as…

Vision Strong “Miss Representation” is a documentary film by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who illustrates the way media portrays women and the issues that come along with this portrayal in the face of young girls while trying to expose it. In order for Newsom to get her point across she had to build a strong claim. The documentary sheds light on the portrayal of women and helps build a stronger claim on how this portrayal is wrong by sharing her story, using the stories of young girls who have had issues because of this portrayal, using visuals, and facts from successful women. In the 2011 Miss Representation documentary, directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, it discusses the limited, but also degrading portrayals of women that mainstream media and culture produce. Newsom graduated from Stanford University with a Master’s degree in Business Administration and is a CEO, actress, filmmaker, and advocate. As a woman and an actress, she presents her belief that media is a huge contributor in making women feel powerless by providing several examples to deliver her message. Newsom effectively convinces the audience of Miss Representation that media under-represents women through the use of emotional appeals, appealing to credibility, and by including a counterargument but then refuting it.…

I agree with you that pointing out of the three methods of Newton’s work, “Newsom effectively convinces the audience of Miss Representation that the media does not portray women in a sense that women want to heard by including individuals voicing their thoughts, providing useful information, and personal experience.” First, I agree with you that the film has many individual’s negative perspective towards as a member of the society. Zebra Balay’s Huffington article, “What We Forget When We Talk about Hip-Hop's Women Problem” focuses on the double standards of misogyny found within hip hop culture as a way to suggest that music critics should analyze other musical genres and American society. Blay’s appropriate choice of words combined with the use of other authors’ articles throughout her article, builds her credibility and appeal to the readers emotions. However, her use of exemplification to establish the issue of misogyny within the music industry, creating an ineffective argument.…

Hip hop culture, more commonly known as sub-genre rap, is often characterized by excessive violence compared to other popular culture genres like country-western. However, hip hop is the symptom of cultural violence, not the cause. It results from a prevalent problem of youth living in the racially stratified inner-city ghettos, thereby having sharpened socioeconomic worldviews through deep racial and economic disparities. This behavior is clearly portrayed in the book The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace in which hip hop, the dominant music genre in the “illtown”, subconsciously impacts Rob’s decision of staying in his suboptimal neighborhood East Orange even after graduation, which results in his eventual downfall. Brotherhood, or…

Miss Representation seems to look at intersectional theory by representing women who are considered a minority group in many patriarchal societies. America is a male dominated nation with many men in power and very few women, especially women of color. The film explains that women who are placed in positions of power have just as hard of a time as women who are in oppressed groups, this is due to the fact that all women in are represented in a poor light in media. Our society sexualizes women in ads, movies, and television and therefore creates limitations for women in other areas of life. When it comes to the dominant culture within the United States, it usually has to do with masculinity. With masculinity in mind, it is important to address what is and is not considered to be masculine. For starters, in order to be considered masculine, one is typically male, must be heterosexual, and avoid the involvement in feminine activities. One thing that is seen as masculine is showboating one’s strength. A real life example would be thinking back to those elementary through high school days when boys would always compete with one another to basically prove that he is better than another boy when it comes to strength, athleticism, or anything else of that nature by fighting or racing on foot.…
