(Wendy Mass) On the rough journey to the gulags, Andrius displayed the hopefulness he has for the future by being kind and loving to everyone he travelled with. Love and kindness is displayed immediately in the novel. This is evident in the character of Andrius. He repeatedly put the lives of others before his. He makes a serious decision and puts his life at risk to keep Lina and Jonas safe. Andrius is willing to go look for their father all by himself. “…You are not going, I’ll go.” (Sepetys 41) The possibility of serious consequences is very much possible. Despite the risk, he does something he does not need to do, but did it out of love. ‘Andrius grabbed him and we tried to hide between the wheels.’ (Sepetys 42) Not very long into the dangerous decision they were almost were caught. Andrius knows this choice was not a safe one, but he put his life on the line to make sure Lina and Jonas’s were not. Further in the novel Andrius is face with a decision, something he never thought he will ever have to do, something no one ever wishes to do.
