What a heroic journey! Everybody knows who is the protagonist of a story if they read it but how do they know? How do you or I know the heroes are, in fact, heroes in, for example, the Matrix and Beowulf? This is what I will present in this essay. I will be using the Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell for both of them by using three stages from it. For the Matrix, I will be using “Meeting with Mentor”, “The Ordeal” and “Return with Elixir” stages. For Beowulf, I will be using “Call to Adventure”, “Reward” and “Return with Elixir” stages. In the Matrix, Neo meets Morpheus, a guy that he was looking for and vice versa. In this stage of “Meeting with Mentor”, Morpheus is convincing Neo to take the red pill to get out of the Matrix. The hero gets something in return for his good deeds. In the “Return with Elixir” stage, Beowulf dies and his people burned his body and put the dragon’s treasures in a tower named after Beowulf. Now, in this stage, it shows that Beowulf’s legacy will live on and it shows that he is very dear to his people and companions. Right, when a hero dies or disappears, the people, who looked up at him, feels sorrow of the loss of a great person? Well, in this stage, it proves that his people feel deep awe in him. Here is a quote to prove it “Beowulf’s followers Rode, mourning their beloved leader, crying that no better king had ever Lived, no prince so mild, no man So open to his people, so deserving of praise.”(Page 52). In conclusion, there are certain things and characteristics a hero has to acquire to prove he is the hero. Among some of them are courage, sympathy, and willing to risk their lives for good. Not only qualities, the hero must have but the hero must be very dear to someone or a group of people that needs him/her and feel deep respect towards him/her. Only to be very dear to the person or people, the hero must do certain good deeds to earn their respect and build a connection to the people or the person. So this is my perspective of what a hero
