First sign is the artificial lighting and beams used throughout scenes within the matrix, secondly the fact that the characters are being controlled by a computerised technology and how the suits portray authority. Reflective surfaces are absent in the matrix, which clearly indicates that what you see is not real. Another sign is where the glass bends before it shutters into pieces. This act as a clear indication that the matrix is in fact not the actual reality. In reality the future is unknown and uncertain. The people do not see these signs and symbols and therefore do not question whether they live in the real world, Morpheus and the others do however notices it and distinguish the real from the virtual world
Costume and makeup is an important aspects in a film but is often overlooked. In The Matrix it is kept to a minimum and is very natural. There are however hidden symbols in the film like the sunglasses that act as an indication that point out the individuals who knows the “truth” about the matrix. The suits also show superiority and authority, like people working in office spaces and government, whereas the black leather Morpheus and the other characters wear indicates more rebellion with their themed clothing and sleek hairstyles, clothes often associated with punk-like people who are
