These alterations in the individual’s phenotype can improve the way they function on a daily basis, and even help some overcome difficulties of specific diseases and disorders. One particular kind of genetic modification helps to create insulin for those who suffer from diabetes. This is important for those who struggle to produce insulin on their own, so they can utilize new and viable insulin. Insulin is wielded to open the cells and permit the entrance and usage of glucose. Insulin is a hormone that is made in the pancreas. It is produced by the beta cells that are located in the islets and it is naturally occurring in most people. The production of insulin is significant in allowing the glucose to provide energy for the cells. When insulin is not present in the cell, glucose is unable to enter due to the fact that the cell remains closed. The main distinction between the two is that type 1 customarily presents itself in those of younger years, and is from where its original name, juvenile diabetes, is derived. Although type 1 diabetes mostly occurs in children and young adults, it can develop at any age. In type 1 diabetes, the insulin hormone is not produced, so there is no insulin in the cell. In this particular type of diabetes, the immune system attacks the pancreas for unknown reasons. This is referred to as “autoimmune disease” because the immune system views the insulin-producing cells as alien to the pancreas and kills them. This attack causes insulin to not be produced, and no glucose is then further able to enter the
