Behavior is goal oriented, and as a leader or manager, understanding why an individual or group of people behave in certain ways, becomes essential to getting things done through people (Hersey, Blanchard, & Johnson, 2008). Past and present behaviors and patterns of behavior are often linked to childhood experiences and certain events that occur over a person’s lifetime (Antoine, 2012). Even though an event or experience in a person’s life may be completely benign in nature, it is within our human nature to attach a specific meaning or purpose to an event, furthermore, an individual also determines whether the experience was positive or negative and then applies a personal interpretation to the experience, hence, a pattern of behavior then follows (Antoine, 2012). Parental influence, to an extent, also determines future patterns of behavior in children, for instance, an overprotective parent may mislead a child into believing that life is without difficulty, therefore, when the child enters into adulthood they may possess the same belief and act accordingly (Hersey et al., 2008).
Behavior is a function of something both inside and outside the person in a situation (Hersey et al., 2008, p. 15). The way a person feels about something occurs on the inside first, thus, motives and needs are then reflected in a person’s attitude and personality that can be seen on the outside of a person through actions (Hersey et al., 2008, p. 15).
