Beatboxing and the Saxophone
The style of the concert will be mash up of Hip-Hop and Classical Indian music. This is obvious from the name of the concert, but from the web it states the artist that will be performing will “present a collaborative works mixing genres of music to each of the cultural upbringing and exploring spaces between classical Indian, acoustic hip-hop, and Go-Go from D.C. (NisthaRaj).” Now it will be interesting to see how the artist are able to mash the two styles together as one is very strict with a governing set of rules while the other is a mix of many different genres of music. area during the 1960s. It is a subgenre of funk music which is a compromised of soul, jazz, and R&B music. Funk at the time was new form style of music creating a danceable form of music. Much of Go-go is African-inspired music consisting of very rhythmic based instruments. Unlike funk, go-go music focuses more on having the audience participating during the piece being performed. A call and response system is used during the music. The musician will say something for the audience to repeat at a specific interval or after a key phrase. Usually the phrase is recurrent throughout that entire piece. The rhythm uses a quarter and eighth notes ornamented by percussion instruments (Christylez Bacon). Melody is also repeated throughout the entire performance as the audience is key portion of the performance. There is no real use of melody in the music as it mostly consisting of rhythmic songs that an audience is able to dance to. The majority of other components of music are up to the artist to decide. Depending on their affinity to a certain genre of music, the components of music could lean more heavily toward one specific style of music while incorporating other elements of other genres (Christylez Bacon). At the concert we heard three different styles of music mixed together to form Mr. Bacon’s interpretation of what go-go music is and what it should sound like.
