Guido d’Arezzo was an Italian Benedictine Monk born in France in the century year of 995. Guido was not a composer during this time, instead he was a musical therapist and teacher. Although he was not a composer, Guido made the discovery of a new form of music notation after moving to Italy where he also worked for Bishop Theobald, despite the fact that he was a music therapist and teacher ("GUIDO D'AREZZO"). With his new discovery, this method made it possible for composers to record their music on paper. Beforehand, singers and composers had to remember their own melodies and chants by memory, causing major differences within the music as they passed the music down generations ("GUIDO D'AREZZO").…
This past Friday, I had the opportunity to see Dr. Rachel Whitcomb's performance in PNC Recital Hall, titled "Back on my Feet Again. " This was a country, blues, and bluegrass concert coming from a vocalist and professor with a classical learning background. It centered around a theme that although a knowledge of classical techniques is important for any singer, they should still try to incorporate their own unique musical techniques into their teaching or performance repertoire. The beginning of the concert featured a digital presentation that questioned what "appropriate" music should be considered and who has the authority to decide what should be performed by formal singers. The questions were all rhetorical and would later be answered by Dr. Whitcomb throughout her performance.…
On the surface, one might not think that the great Italian opera La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and the acclaimed indie group Dinosaur Jr. have much in common. One concert, for instance, took place in an intimate performing arts center to an attentive and quietly reverent audience while the other in a loud, rough-and-tumble rock venue to a lively and informal audience. Indeed, there may appear to be no similarities between the effortlessly skilled classical stylings of the UNT College of Music and the deliberately ramshackle indie sound of Dinosaur Jr. However, with these two concerts, we see Christopher Small’s concept of “musicking” in full effect and, critically, two different forms of the same musical elitism.…
Although there are no percussion instruments used, there is strong rhythm between the clapping and light knocking on the ground. The title and repeated lyrics “Sheep, Sheep, Don’t You Know the Road” has a very strong religious suggestion. Using “call-and-response…
With a simple clap of their hands a teenager could destroy their self, as well as the people around them. At least, in the book Unwind by Neal Shusterman, they can. One of the main characters even come close to doing it. In the novel, shortly after being separated from two other main characters, Connor and Risa, and getting taken into a Harvest Camp, Lev is faced with an important choice. He and two other teens that he had met before he was caught had devised a plan.…
The siege of Sarajevo, the longest in the history of modern warfare, began on April 5th 1992 and ended on February 29th 1996. During the four years, the politically motivated Army of Republika Srpska, under the command of Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić, dropped an average of 377 shells every single day causing damage to over 64% of the buildings and over 100,000 apartments. The Bosnian Serb army also used the hills surrounding Sarajevo to its advantage by placing snipers there who targeted innocent civilians including children, elderly and women. The siege ended in 1996 after the intervention of the United Nations and The NATO, which forced the Bosnian Serb Army to declare ceasefire. However, the once beautifully diverse city of Sarajevo…
The performance started off with the song titled “My House is the Red Earth” in which I was peculiar surprised with. The piece began off with Joy playing the saxophone and then later was joined by the guitars and drums with a slow melody. They had kept an upbeat pace of…
Music of the Third Reich During the Nazi regime, Hitler and his party members used propaganda as an integral method to promote the philosophies of the Third Reich. Due to Hitler’s lifelong passion for it, music became one of the essential avenues of Hitler’s propaganda messages. Bruckner, Beethoven and most Notably Wagner were just a few of the many composers whom were glorified by Hitler.…
As we learned from the previous assignment, Alvin Lucier is a composer of experimental music. This work August Moon is consisted of three instruments, which are horn, piano, and a string instrument that might be a cello. Entire music is composed of the similar patterns of playing. Piano, horn, and cello are playing as a trio every seven seconds. During the duration of the music, which is about fifteen minutes, the similar playing is repeated and each instruments paly their own role.…
Lindy Hop and The Argentine Tango Dance and music play an important role in the cultural traditions of various societies. I chose to focus on two social dances from different cultures that are still celebrated today. For my familiar dance, I selected Lindy Hop which originated in the United States. This dance form is often shown in movies, and the free flowing movements caught my attention. Through my preliminary research, I discovered the Argentine Tango which interested me due to its improvisational nature and the ways music inspires movement.…
Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…
What is the Africanist Aesthetic? It’s the African-based cultural forms and philosophical approach existing in the African Diaspora that continue to reflect similar musical, dance, and oral practices as those in Africa; though not African, enough resemblances in the performer's’ attitude and relationship to audience exist that cultural connections to African cultural practices are apparent. How does African culture continue to show in Hip-hop over time? Hip-Hop culture, since around the 1950s, has shown the world different aspects of the Africanist Aesthetic within its culture. Though it is understood that not everyone in hip-hop is considerably part of the Africanist Aesthetics, they still embrace the creation of hip-hop and its origins.…
As stated before in our first lecture, dance is a living and fleeting art form. I believe that dance is a living art form because it is a three-dimensional picture to art. What I mean by this is that, art is normally seen on walls or as sculptures, but dance is an amazing opportunity to view art while in movement. If you are anything like me, when I look at a painting of two people or many, I always wonder what it would be like to see them actually dancing, singing, or even laughing. By watching dance, it is my living art form.…
We applaud again a few moments later when the conductor came onstage. And you can applaud only after the ending of the piece of music, but not during the brief pause between the…
Funk music as an expression brought with it a newly packaged music that was capable of fully embracing both the performers’ and audiences energies. Funk emphasized dancing and how it further expressed implicit meanings not always explicitly understood through the lyrics. Funk music opened the door for a particular subculture, black youth, to take their form of dance expression and broadcast it across the United States through the culturally important program Soul Train. In particular, the importance of individual, creative dance broke the mold of many of the dancing trends in music that preceded it. This important aspect of musical expression transcended the era of funk and to this day dancing is still just as important in the world of music…
