It's supposed to be good luck to find a penny and pick it up but it won't make you wealthy. According to a stat from MoneyCrashers.com if you pick up a penny taking five seconds you would earn $7.20 an hour which is under minimum wage. That just goes to show how useless pennies are. We have wasted time, effort, and our economy on pennies. And all they do is just weigh down your pocket. It is common knowledge that pennies are more expensive to produce than they are worth. But, there are many other negative detriments about pennies. Honestly I see them more in math problems than in real life. Pennies come from mines in the earth specifically zinc mines. For evidence about how pennies are harmful we turn to MoneyCrashers a well renowned nonprofit organization. Pennies are 97% zinc and 2.5% copper. Along with zinc, the ores contain various other metals such as toxic metals like cadmium and lead. Zinc is harmful to humans in relatively high amounts, and dropped pennies can easily contaminate water. If you drop a penny it could cause trees to become contaminated …show more content…
It takes energy to extract zinc from ore to roll it out and make it into coins. In addition to that it takes lots of energy to transport pennies from place to place. Because they are worth so little, they are much heavier than any coin, relative to their worth which means you need more energy to transport them. This energy is created by polluting our environment through fossil fuel, and the transportation also emits high Co2 levels which pollutes our environment. For further evidence, we can ask DesignLifeCycle.org which is a site created by students and professors at University of California. They calculate just transporting pennies to banks not even the other energy consuming methods of producing and transporting pennies; The transportation will put about 1.5 million metric tons of Co2 into the atmosphere each
