Argument Essay: The Penny Should Be Abolished

The US uses 1.5 cents to make just one penny last year. That is .5 cents more than the price of the penny causing the US to lose millions each year. This fact leads to arguments on why the useless penny should be abolished. As a growing country, pennies represent the expanding nation for everyone to see. But, the country will not be able to grow any more if people lose millions each year from useless pieces of zinc. Although the penny displays the nation's growth and can save people money over time, the penny is a useless coin costing millions of dollars for the US, wastes time, and causes more problems than it is worth. As a growing issue, the United States continues to pay millions of dollars every year to create useless pennies. Approximately 46 million dollars of the governments money was spent on unproductive pennies last year. Source C adds to this statement when incorporating the U.S. Mint and that they, “make out a billion pennies a month.” This analyzes how many pennies in the US are produced each month and before people know it they are loosing millions for …show more content…
As an important part in history, the penny represents American past within the details. Weller identifies in source D that the penny is still favorited and most of all, “The penny is still important to our pricing system.” People want to see the penny grow just like their country and want to keep the historic coin. Although the penny is worth more as it gets older, the penny causes more problems than it is worth. As a matter of fact, pennies are causing many problems in America within the government to citizens hand bags. Source C explained the cycle throughout the penny saying how it, “disappears because they are literally more trouble than they are worth.” Unlike quarters and dimes, the penny never is used and it is a stressful time getting it in and out of cash registers and

The penny creates an inconvenience for everyone as our monetary system focuses on its use even though its value is miniscule. That time spent looking for pennies in line at the grocery store could be spent on other thing instead of wasting everyone else's time. Also, the penny in itself is a waste of time as it is valued less than its material cost and much less than its labor cost. This means that as more pennies are produced the government will continuously lose money. In doing away with the penny, many of this nation’s economic problems might actually be…

If someone were to actually spend many hours of their lives collecting the coins, although it is illegal, they could melt them down and get more money than the actual amount of pennies they had, roughly seven-tenths of a penny more. Ultimately, the penny is just not cost effective to our society in which we in habit, therefore to keep living in a prosperous nation we must eradicate the idea of a penny from existence.…

((information from source numbers 1 and 2)) Even though the penny cost more than it’s worth to make (which is around 1.7 cents to make) the nickel does too! The nickel costs around 11.18 cents to make, and that’s not even the beginning. If we got rid of the penny we would probably use the rounding system. The bad thing is that some people think the rounding system will end up costing people extra money. Some stores might not choose to round their prices down.…

The other side says that the penny is too heavy and is a dead weight. Doing the math if you were to ship 100 million pennies on a cargo ship to Hawaii, the weight of 100 million pennies weight is in pounds 551,155 pounds and a full size cargo ship can hold up to 25,000 tons so it obviously is not a dead weight to a ship to carry coins for our country to use from one place to another. Another good point is that the penny does cost more to make costing 1.7 cents for the penny but like I said earlier in this easy the nickel also cost more to make than it's worth costing 8 cents far more than it is worth but since the penny only is worth one cent and the nickel is worth five nobody picks fun or says we should get rid of the nickel. Another part of the argument of the side that wants to get rid of it is that it's a waste of time to make and if we got rid of it we would save money and the machines and the people that run them would do half the work. The flaw with this argument is that obesity is a big problem in today's society.…

Within the past few years, its cost has fluctuated slightly, but has stayed around 1.6 cents. At such a low value to begin with, and costing more to make than its actual value, it is not worth the time, cost, nor the energy being used to produce the penny. While all of this energy and money is going into manufacturing these pennies, the mills could be much more efficient and mass-produce many other coins, more useful than the…

Is the penny needed in the United States anymore? Some people believe the penny should be preserved because it is an important historical part of the United States. However, other people believe the menny should be eliminated because it is costs more to produce than what it is even worth. The penny should be eliminated in the U.S. currency because pennies are a waste of time, not worth a lot, too much to make, and nobody can buy something with just one penny. The penny should be eliminated because of several reasons including things will cost less and the government will not waste $100 million each year.…
