Assess the role of Aung San Suu Kyi in the pro-democracy Movement in Burma
Aung San Suu Kyi was born June 19, 1945 in Burma. Her father (General Aung San) was a former Prime Minister of Burma, this is what spawned her political interests. General Aung San was assassinated in 1947 by one of his rival politicians. Her mother (Khin Kyi) was also involved in the political field and was appointed ambassador to India in 1960. Aung San Suu Kyi’s mother sent her to England to receive a better education. Also at University she met the love of her life, Michael Aris who was an expert in his field studying Tibetan monks. (Aung San Suu Kyi Lady of No Fear, n.d.) Aung San Suu Kyi had two boys, one in 1973 and the other in 1977. In 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi returned to Burma to look after her mother who had a stroke. This was the turning point in Aung San Suu Kyi’s life, just as she settled down to look after her two children.

It is believed that this group was behind an attack on Aung in 2003, although she was not killed more than 70 of her supporters were. (A Biography of Aung San Suu Kyi, n.d.). In 2003, Aung San Suu Kyi was again put under house arrest. This was her strictest one yet. Although she was allowed some visits from UN members none of these gained her freedom. In May 2009, Aung San Suu Kyi actually committed a crime, this was that she got a visit from John Yettaw who swam across a lake to talk to her. She was arrested and charged with breaking her house arrest terms. Her sentence was prolonged for 18 months in detention which coincidently meant she was released just after the elections, making it sure she could not run for office.
