Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ( Adhd ) Essay
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, abbreviated to ADHD, is one of the most well-known exceptionalities found in children. This neurobiological condition is usually discovered in the early elementary years and persists into adulthood (Perera, Fernando, Yasawardena, & Karunaratne, 2009, p. 1363). The prevalence rate of ADHD varies greatly from approximately 2% to 10% of all elementary school-aged children, with males more likely to meet criteria for the diagnosis than females, with a ratio approximately 3:1 (Harrison, Vannest, & Reynolds, 2010, p. 147; Lahti et al., 2006, p. 1168; Law, Sinclair, & Fraser, 2007, p. 100; Hastings, Beck, Daley, & Hill, 2005, p. 457; Whitley,& Tankersley, 2010, p. 174). There are three different subtypes of ADHD and each has different characteristics that define them. This paper will discuss these characteristics for each type, along with the possible causes and treatments for ADHD (Whitley, & Tankersley, 2010, p. 173). Students with ADHD often struggle in many areas in school because they can not focus on their work and quickly fall behind. This paper will also discuss ways to provide early intervention and provide strategies for students with ADHD.
