While the fetus is in the womb, syndromes such as Down Syndrome and Respiratory Distress Syndrome are able to be detected before babies are born. On the other hand, disorders are not detected when the fetus is still in the womb. Disorders are detected after birth or are developed later on in the child’s life. Some of these disorders include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Bipolar Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). ASD has recently become common in children throughout the world. This paper will address the following questions: What are the characteristics and impacts of Autism disorder? How does the disorder affect these children in school? What types of treatments are offered for the children? Children affected by Autism disorder suffer from social, emotional, and cognitive problems that impact their educational life. Though children have to learn to live with the disorders there is Cognitive Behavioral therapy and medication to make it easier for them. First, this paper will provide background information of how the Autism Spectrum Disorder is a broad spectrum with mild to severe symptoms including the differences of Autism and Asperger’s disorders. At the end of the background information, it will explain how the spectrum was acknowledged as a disability by the United States.
