A positivist approach to research in sociology can and should use the methods of physical science (e.g. Physics, Chemistry etc.) These sciences deal with the physical world and can be interpreted into data regarding society. Positivists believe that quantitative methods are best to identify and measure social structures within groups, these methods include using questionnaires.
An interpretivist approach to research believes that people can think for themselves and are able to give consideration to what they do; if this is the case scientific methods are not suitable.
