In the 19th century, slavery was a helpful tool to the southerners. This allowed them to make a tremendous amount of money. Positive and negative attributes were involved in the process of slavery. In two articles and four pictures, slavery will be explained in different point of views.
For example, In the Pro Slavery argument, there are three excerpts. In the first excerpt, it is addressing the physical and moral proofs of the Negroes. It states that the Negroes intelligence was drawn from history and also has multiple explanations of status for the Negroes. The explanation of his characters was said to indicate a low mind. His eyes were very important to the makeup of a Negro. Also the reduced facial were said to be those of a violent person, and that his characteristics were the reason he was a slave and not something of power over the white men. Facial angles were the determination of your category. Hero’s and philosophers have an angle of 90 degrees and a God was set at 100 degrees. The Negros angle was at 70 and the brutes were below 70 degrees. In the second excerpt, it says that the slaves owe the master their labor since he was the apprentice of life. The master was responsible for the caring of the slave in old age, infancy and sickness. “Slavery is the negro system of labour.” The slave works for his home, food, and clothing. Slavery was seen to be a connection between master and servant. Eventually the connected would be for a lifetime not just for a couple of days or weeks. None of them are subject to steal and want. Everything they need is given to them if they work for their master. Also, if their servants are intelligent, they are more likely to make more money rather than more substance. Slavery made him an orderly and effective worker rather than a savage, conforms him, and helps improve his mind morals and manners. In the Church and prejudice article, Frederick Douglass attended a church for communion in the north. While the blacks stood in the back, the whites took communion. After they were completed, the server invited the blacks to the front saying “Come up, colored friends, Come up! For you know God is no respecter of persons!” He tells the story of a young black girl who was baptized in the same water as the white people. After the young colored girl was out, she thought she would sit at the Lord’s Table with everyone else. The deacon handed around a rounded cup and everyone took a sip, and once the cup was to the point of the black girl they were forced to hand it to her since the minister was staring at them. Then the white girl beside the black girl, hesitated none and proceeded out the door of the church. Later on, another young lady fell into a trance and when she awoke she claimed she witnessed Heaven. Everyone was over eager to encounter what she had claimed she had seen. Another woman’s eagerness exceeded the others and asked if she noticed any blacks. Her reply was that she did not go into the kitchen. Frederick said that the prejudices was even in the House of God. The government wanted men to help fight in the union army. Any man that could fight or do any handy work was wanted, yet they rejected the black men. Frederick asks if the black men are not men in their eyes. He can do just as much as the white man can do, so why is he considered and less of a man that the rest? Then, In the currier and Ives painting, they portray that slavery is a casual job. A slave is laying on the bales in the wagon, they are not bending down picking cotton, and they look like they are conversing across the rows. The steam boat in the back illustrates that slavery is a modern idea. They
