They believed that the emphasis of their traditional, if not stereotypical, culture would help their cause in the face of Western culture whom may have romanticized exoticism. The trade-off is, in lieu of representing an emphasized indigenous culture; the individuals who identify themselves with an indigenous group may be forced to live inauthentically if only to appease the way that others view them. Going back to Jawad’s article, while Western liberal societies might have negative connotations towards symbols of Muslim oppression such as how Muslim’s perceive the body and technology; the writer also understands why Muslim women would reject media portrayal of Islamic ‘backwardness.’ Perhaps these Muslim women felt inauthentic living in a Western community and going against everything their religious teaching tells them. By living the lifestyle they believe is most authentically Muslim, it would help further affirm or state their advocacy for being a proud
