Cognitive behavioural therapy or CBT is an approach to treat a variety of different mental disorders, including Anxiety and Depression. The treatment focuses on identifying negative thoughts and challenges an individual faces and then teaches them to learn practical strategies to combat them. The strategies are designed to bring about positive and quick changes to a person’s mental health. CBT aims to show how their thoughts effect their mood and behaviour, along with teaching the individual to think in a less negative way about their life and themselves. The treatment is based on the fundamental understanding that thinking negatively is a habit and like any other habit, can be broken.

CBT can be used to treat a large range of psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, irrational fears, eating disorders and insomnia. In particular treating anxiety and depression in teenagers will be focused on. CBT can be used to treat anxiety, and is a skill for coping with the anxious feelings. As with any treatment, the CBT approach works better for some teens than others, and the outcome of the treatment will be different as each patient begins CBT with different backgrounds and issues.
