Introduction The increase in the use of antibiotics within recent years has become an issue leading to an increased amount of antibiotic susceptibility in the bacteria that the antibiotics are used against (Traub 2000). There has been a reported increase in the resistance of bacteria to the antibiotics to which they are exposed, and this can be seen in the case of Campylobacter coli (Gaudreau and Gilbert 1997). It has also been shown that bacteria’s resistance to antibiotics often decrease as the concentration of antibiotics increase (Gaudreau and Gilbert 1997). The increase in the amount of antibiotic can be seen to decrease the amount of bacteria that are resistant to the antibiotic. When Serratia marcescens was tested for it’s susceptibility to ampicillin, it was found that it’s susceptibility to ampicillin decreased as the number of generations of bacteria exposed to ampicillin increased (Haddix et al. 2000). From this information, it can be concluded that there is a possibility of an increase in ampicillin resistant bacteria due to artificial selection of the ampicillin. It is important to be cautious of the use of antibiotics to prevent the artificial selection of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
There are a wide variety of antibiotics, such as ampicillin, used to treat a multitude of infections. Ampicillin is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, and due to the fact that it is a beta-lactam antibiotic, it is effective against both gram positive and…
