Gender effect in the Sierra Leone War Through Ishmael Beah and Mariatu Kamara’s autobiographies, the world learned about the devastating war in Sierra Leone through the eyes of a boy and a girl. The civil war stripped children from their families and killed many innocent civilians. In A Long Way Gone by Beah Beah he says, “One of the main aims of the rebels was to force the civilians to stay with them, especially women and children” (Beah 37). The rebels used the civilians as either bait for the army or as servants. They took girls to cook or exploit and recruited boys as soldiers.…
Throughout history, men and women does not treat equally. Men had more privileges and rights, such as being able to vote, able to get a better job and able to get higher education. Even though, we have improved our livings as time goes by, sexism still exists today in our society. Gender types refer to the roles, behaviors, and expectations our culture assigns to those bodily differences. We are taught that gender differences are natural; therefore we didn’t notice how much we have been socialized in to them.…

The 2009 film The Codes of Gender by Sut Jhally, shows how advertising effects the way society views these gender roles. Throughout history race and gender have been closely intertwined in the construction of both black and white women’s bodies alike. The female body being viewed as natural, the medicalizing of the female body, and advertising the ideal beauty are concepts that have been embedded in Western thinking for many years. These three theories show the interaction between gender and race in the construction of thoughts concerning, and the interpretation of, the woman’s body. The first concept that affects how we view the woman’s body deals with relating the woman to the body.…
All aspects of gender are constructed by social, societal factors. Within just one day, I recorded the instances I found myself or someone around me “doing gender.” “Doing gender” means that people constantly create and change aspects of “gender” based on human interaction and social life, mostly without even being aware of it (Lorber 1). Additionally, the media is repeatedly shaping what masculinity and femininity “should” look like through magazines, films, and politics (Miss Representation). This social construction has been extremely problematic throughout our history in how it affects the self-reflection and identities of men and women in the United States.…
In the United States, one of the largest contemporary issues is conflict between genders. Many believe that women are being actively suppressed in American society, while others believe men and women are completely equal. Meanwhile, others maintain that there really is no such thing as males and females in nature, but rather they are social constructs that are no longer necessary and must be shed in order for society to continue to evolve. In reality, gender roles are a very complicated component of society, and this complexity leads to the well-recognized intensity of the debate about gender roles in American society. However, a key to equality between men and women that has been neglected in light of this enormous gender conflict in society…
Gender Identity in The Importance of Being Earnest In Victorian England, people’s identity controlled every aspect of their life. Their social class, religion, wealth, and gender all formed their identity, and dictated what they could and could not do, and how they could live. Acting outside of these identity-based restrictions was not often done, and when it was, was often considered inappropriate behaviour. These rules were especially ridged regarding gender, and firmly dictated how each gender should act.…
“Women have it harder than men… Women aren’t treated equal… Society is dominated by men”. Has society even thought that maybe men don’t have it as easy as society thinks? Society has focused too much on women's rights movement that they forgot about men. Media has affected gender roles throughout generations.…
In the excerpt The Social Construction of Gender by Judith Lorber, she explained how gender is a part of a structured system and how it is also maintained as a process. Judith Lorber concluded her excerpt by stating that gender equality “is produced and maintained by identifiable social process and built into the general social structure and individual identities” (67). In Black Feminist Thought by Patricia Hill Collins, she explained how Black women were considered oppressed because of their gender as well as the way they were raised and taught to do things. I agree with both of these author’s main points because this is how race and class is looked at in society.…
Abstract This paper covers the topic of gendering in North American culture. Americans have gendered everything ranging from personality traits to colors. This is an issue because it creates stereotypes, can cost women extra money, and limits self-expression. Three arguments are given as to why nothing should be gendered.…
She refuses to live the subservient life that George Murchinson, a potential suitor, believes she should. She is most attracted to Asagai, another potential suitor, because of his racial authenticity. However, she was “not interested in being someone’s little episode” (64). She appreciates that Asagai does not change who he is because of circumstances or surroundings. However, his real intentions with Beneatha are obscure.…

Male and females will interact and think in the way society shapes both men and women. In the eyes of society, men can be approached as fierce, strong, and prideful individuals. Furthermore, women can usually be seen as sentimental, lighthearted, and caring. Men’s and women’s communication strategies are related to the issue of social and biological norms in the way an individual treats a person from a specific gender due the prior beliefs a specific individual is raised upon.…
