Roosevelt became the thirty-second president of the United States in 1933. Being credited with saving the country from the great depression it was in, he created the New Deal, which provided many public programs that helped to aid the poor and others in need during that time. Programs like the Social Security Act and the Tennessee Valley Authority, the former which provided a system of government funded old age benefits, and the latter which administered flood control, electricity, and much more to the Tennessee Valley region, provided aid to the millions of Americans in need. The New Deal received both praise and criticism from many people, some critics even worried that it would bring America one step closer to becoming a communist country, such as China or Cuba. Whilst the New Deal opponents “...couldn’t agree on whether Roosevelt was a… communist dictator… they agreed that the rapid expansion of federal and presidential power was absolutist in its tendency and had to be stopped” (ADPS pg.310).
