PopCo, by Scarlett Thomas, was written in 2004 in England. Published by Harcourt, Inc. PopCo is a novel which leaves a reader with puzzles to solve after reading and a thirst for knowledge. This fictional novel covers a wide range of subjects spanning from World War II to buried treasure. This novel has the power to influence young minds with its clever use of bouncing around from one subject to the next; this novel truly makes a reader think. There are many clear influences on the author which would have dramatically shaped the plots and subplots of this novel. The author of this novel, Scarlett Thomas, has also had a life that could have shaped the plots of this novel; it is speculated that the protagonist of the story is loosely based on her. There are many events that happened from 1990 to 2004 that could have strongly influenced or inspired the plot and events in the novel. Certain popular events in this time period that would have influenced the author could be the increasing use of technology, an interest in spies and coding due to the aftermath and exposure of war, and the culture of gluttonous business owners in England. Thomas’s ‘Popco’ shows that the author had a point that she wanted to be clear; people in business should stick-it-to-the-man.
