I think that one of the challenges was the fact that they had no money. This is a challenge because almost the entire family has to work sunrise to sunset. In the story it says, “Papa then took out a pencil and began to figure out how much we earned our first day. He wrote down the numbers, crossed some out, wrote down some more. ‘Quince’ (Fifteen), he murmured.”(This quote is in the second to last paragraph on page 3) This shows that from working from sunrise to sunset 3 people only made a total of fifteen dollars. Another challenge is their working conditions. This can be gad because they might have to work in below freezing temperatures and extreme heat.
