Analysis Of Nijedka Akunyili Crosby's Predecessors

Nijedka Akunyili Crosby’s mixed media exhibition Predecessors, being showcased at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati Ohio from July 15th to October 1st of this year, is composed of work completed in the past five years including pieces of the same name, Predecessors. These two pieces which make up Predecessors are composed of acrylic paint, colored pencil, charcoal and photo transfers on paper. Hanging side by side, the pieces both complement and contrast not only each other but also in and of themselves with the materials being used. The hybridization of materials creates both a sense of chaos – the contrast between the photo transfers and the block coloring, familiarity – the personal photographs displayed, and uniformity – the overall artist’s style, between the two pieces.

On one of these chairs sits an African American woman wearing a pink and feminine dress, black tights, and colorfully striped shoes. In this piece, Akunyili Crosby uses the photo transfers in a different way. The photo transfers emphasize shadows – the shadow of the chair as well as the reflection of the table off the chair, the shadow casted by the table, and by the woman.
The two pieces as a whole employ similar color themes – lots of warm and light pink colors, as well as black, whites and greys, burgundy, maroon, and purple hues. Akunyili Crosby’s attention to detail is exquisite – especially in the areas in which she explores light and reflective materials. The use of photo transfers and emphasis on personal possessions exhibited in her work is both a unique and personal aspect, and provides a plethora of material for the viewer to draw emotion and conversation from, as well as information regarding the artist’s life experiences, culture, and intentions for her

Significant personal events in one’s life can act to influence an individual’s artmaking practice. This is evident through Frida Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ 1944, Jenny Sages ‘After Jack’ 2012 and Christian Thompson ‘King Billy’ 2010. Frida Kahlo, is the first example of such an individual as she experienced a horrible accident causing permanent damage to her spine. As a result of the accident, Kahlo became influenced to paint through using her emotion as a driving force to paint where Kahlo states “I am broken, but I am happy as long as I can paint”. This is depicted in Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ in plate 4 which depicts a figure namely Kahlo herself being pricked by nails with the presence of a broken pillar.…

In this picture by Diet Wiegman, called Shadow dancing, light and shadow is used to create an identifiable image of Michael Jackson on the wall behind it. The image is formed by projecting a lamp on a sculpture that has been created to produce the form that will constitute the bulk of the picture. Light is angled and focused on the sculpture, which is then beamed on the wall creating the illusion of the famous figure through the use of light and shadow. The image is made by the solid object, the sculpture, and the light reflects the shadow for the viewer to see. The use of the principle of light and shadow makes it possible for the art to be recognizable, as Michael Jackson, and is the foundation for the outline and solid black fill.…

The subject matter of Paul Strand’s Porch Shadows is abstracted by limitations of the artist’s preconceived techniques. Strand isolated the subject’s basic formal elements to make it an aesthetically pleasing photograph and nothing more. Anyone can photograph an object, yet it takes a trained eye and a defined strategy to reduce the object into an abstract form. Porch Shadows exemplifies the Modernist shift in photography by rejecting previous conventions of artistic expression and adopting a style that focuses on line, shape, and tonalities rather than the subject matter itself. The Modernist shift becomes evident by analyzing the formal and technical elements of Porch Shadows, as well as Paul Strand’s background in photography.…

The artist that influenced me to create the project I am presenting today is Romare Bearden. Due to the fact, he didn’t learned new techniques and mediums as an artist, but by his life personal experiences. Many of his work had a eye connection in the middle of one’s point of view, many types of geometric shapes, and had an linear and semi-abstract style (Patchwork Quilt). He also had struggled with two artistic sides of himself: his background as “a student of literature and of artistic traditions, and being a black human being involves very real experiences, figurative and concrete”. In the 1960s, civil rights movement he started experimenting again with collage forms such as clippings from magazines, old newspapers, glossy scraps to improve his work.…
