Commie. There are two groups in “Hitler Youth Quex”. One is communist group as a target to be criticized. One is Hitler Youth group. Nazi boys have a plenty of time at the beach eating and swimming together, while also learning Nazi values together. From the film, we can easily observe from the camera that these young men are happy and motivated. However, in the communists group, people are dark and absurd. The woman with the communists, Heini’s mother, is cautious and unhappy. She always cries and eventually suicides for Heini’s fault of rescuing members of Hitler Youth Group. And the communist woman is often flirting with all the other people around the town. It reveals that one can have a better life within the Nazi’s group. This setting is quite powerful to show that the Nazi group is a better group compared to communists group. By surrounding Heini by Communist family, the film creates the impression that Heini resists the brainwashing of the Communists, and instead has free-will, joining the Nazi by his own conviction. The choice of Nazi group rather than communists group shows the importance of being united and devoting themselves to the nation. There are also two groups in “The Most Beautiful”: one is girls in factory who volunteer to work very hard; another is few male soldiers who supervise these females and make plans on production. There’s a clip in “The Most Beautiful” that when Watanabe is being questioned for picking favorites and the group of girls exchanging their gazes between her and the other girls. They’re quite hesitant and sort of weak. Finally, a girl in the group stands out and speaks up for the group then everyone agrees on it. The film uses a lot of eye-level shots to express this kind of soft feelings from these girls. But in the meantime, these girls as a group are so hard working when it comes to improving production. The movie repeatedly shows a graph about their productivity through time – it’s volatile but keeps the uptrend. More importantly, it claims their slogan – “One cannot improve productivity without improving one’s character”. As a movie in 1944, when the empire was defeated on the battlefield, it’s necessary to encourage all the people including men and women by this way.
