Too often we focus on having what we want at the end of our efforts; we overlook what we will need to be successful. This is a thought that occurred to me while reading an article for an assignment in my English Composition class at SNHU. The article was “Me Talk Pretty One Day” written by David Sedaris. In the article, Sedaris writes about wanting to learn the French language, so he moves to Paris and enrolls in a French class. In trade for his tuition, he is granted juvenile discounts and a teacher that openly detests him. Through many trials, requiring a lot of ambition, he learned how unprepared he was to be in the classroom. As a result, he gains little from the course (Sedaris, 1999). This article was entertaining to read as Sedaris sprinkled humor on his experience, helping his readers relate to the mistakes he made while living in foreign surroundings. My opening thought directly results from Sedaris's purpose in writing the article. The article delivers his claim through his attempts to prepare for his education in Paris, notably forgotten human factors, and a diminished outcome at the end of his course; all of which, communicate the value of critical thinking.
