John Steinbeck’s purpose of writing this book was to entertain us with a story of how hard life was during the great depression. Times were very rough and not many people had an easy time making it through that dilemma. The central theme that was portrayed in my reading was that humans are evil. You can be sitting on the street, starving, and people will just pass you by like you mean nothing to them. Especially in this time era where it was a “all men for themselves” type of situation. The time period in which this story takes place is during the Great Depression (1920-1945). It said in the story that the area in which the story takes place is South of Soledad, CA. The two main characters in the story are Lennie and George. In my opinion, Lennie is not the smartest of people. In the beginning of the story, it becomes quite evident that Lennie is mentally handicapped, but physically is quite …show more content…
These two men are Lennie and George. They begin to walk to the ranch, but they found a spot and decide to call it a night. When they arrive to this place, Lennie pulls out a dead mouse and George quickly tells Lennie to get rid of the mouse. (I picked up on the title of the story here.) The next day they continue walking and finally make it to the ranch, where they meet their boss. In George’s effort to get the job, he tells a white lie, and they are hired. The next day the lie is revealed to a minor character, “Slim”. George explains that they were fired from their old job because Lennie touched a woman’s dress and it was considered rape. The next day most of the men go to the local “brothel”. Lennie is left at the ranch with Curly’s wife, who is a very flirtatious woman. Lennie conversed with her and proceeds to touch her hair, but grabs too tightly. She screams and Lennie tries to make her stop and in that attempt he breaks her neck. Lennie is now

Many literary geniuses throughout time have been inspired by events in history or other literature previous to their time, that ultimately shape and influence their writing, such as Shakespeare’s influence of Greek mythology in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, or the Red Scare influencing Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Similarly to literary projects of both past and future, John Steinbeck uses other writers such as Robert Burns to inspire his novels and influence readers across the nation. Although Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men is not a direct parallel to Robert Burns famous poem “To a Mouse” many similar themes and symbols can be connected between the two literary works. The overlying theme of both “To a Mouse” and Of Mice and Men is the common…

Of Mice and Men is a story about two men, one of them mentally handicapped, trying to make money during the Great Depression The story and the film properly portray how a relationship can be when one member of the relationship greatly depends on the other person. And although Lennie was very dependent on George, that aspect helped form George and Lennie 's relationship. I love the book Of Mice and Men. The story of mice and men is not a long book, but in a short amount of time John Steinbeck adds lots of layers to the characters which help form your perspective of them. When Steinbeck was writing, he used a lot of tiny details to build the characters ' personalities.…

The Great Depression occurred during the the 1930’s and up until the beginning of World War 2. In the United States, there was no such thing as money, possessions, or structure. One night you were in the upper class, the next, you were in the same boat as everyone else, broke. But, in the middle of it all stood an oasis; the Salinas River Valley, which is where our author, John Steinbeck and his story, Of Mice and Men, came about. In his novella, Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses George, Crooks, and Curley’s Wife to prove that people will go to extreme measures to escape loneliness.…

“Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck is set in Northern California during the Great Depression, around 1930’s. The main characters, George and Lennie, illustrate the American struggles throughout the great Depression, financially, socially but mostly discrimination. While focusing on the struggles of these times, the theme of this book consists from an exaggeration of total inequality of power between race, with Crooks being segregated and being treated differently because of his skin color, age, with Candy living in fear of getting kicked out due to his increasing age, and gender, with Curley's wife representing the female presence in an atrocious way, serving as morals to the plot. Clearly stating to us that the purpose of this book consist…
