Passion is something present in an individual which is hard for that person to explain in words “why?”. It is simply something that one is compelled to do, and everyone has a passion for something. McCann sets the stage with a mysterious figure hundreds of feet up in the sky on a skyscraper with citizens gathered around waiting for something to happen. The drivers who caused the accident, Lara and Blaine, were two artists living a life controlled by drugs and alcohol. Blaine dismisses the accident as not being his fault, and goes right back to his past life of doing drugs and drinking, similar to how Solomon seemingly returned back to his normal life, running from the truth. Lara, on the other hand, has trouble simply brushing it off as simply an accident. She thinks to herself, “This is not my life. These are not my cobwebs. This is not the darkness I was designed for,”(pg.121). Hitting rock bottom, Lara was able to acknowledge what she had done, and feels obligated to confront Ciaran for her own sake. Ciaran figures out it was her who caused the death of his brother and Jazzlyn, but when he meets Lara and gets to know her, he quickly becomes attracted to her. Both Ciaran and Lara were able to find something positive in a horrible accident which cannot be erased, but eased by moving forward.
Book one of “Let the Great World Spin” is perfectly summed up by the title of the book itself. The characters highlighted in the first few chapters each found a way to keep moving forward. Just because a negative event happens, at the end of the day the Earth will still be spinning, and the sun will rise again the next day. Finding a way to move forward is challenging,
