In the novel, The Road, published in 2006, Cormac McCarthy displays an unbreakable bond between father and son, in a post-apocalyptic world. The Man sees his son as being his only sign on hope in the world at all. The exact setting isn’t given, nor is the names of the characters, but this is to show that this event may as well be happening to anyone and anywhere in the world.

The Boy says he wishes he was with his mom and he wishes he were dead, which recalls memories of his mother saying she wishes they were all dead, and she left them so she wouldn’t have to see her son suffer from this world. The Man and The Boy hide in the woods and one of the bad men finds them. The bad man holds his knife and grabs The Boy, which causes The Man to shoot the bad man to retrieve his son. They run through the woods hiding from the bad men and The Man again has thoughts on whether he’d be able to kill his son or not with the one bullet he has left. The next morning the bad men are gone and The Man and The Boy continue south. The Boy sees another little boy and runs after him, which causes The Man to quickly grab and retrieve his son, The Man not seeing the other little boy at all, which evokes thoughts of them being watched. The winter continues to come in harder and harder and The Man continues to forget things about life before. The Boy continuously asks if they’re going to die to which the man replies, maybe but not NOW. The bad men are also continuously following them but The Man covers their tracks.
