Introduction
I was in grade school told that Christopher Columbus founded America. This was only partly true. Although, he did bring Eastern settlers to the new land which is now called United States of America; there were settlers here before Columbus’ journey. Those people would be the Native Americans. Native Americans were the ones that established America. Columbus just brought it to life to the Eastern region. He made it known to the other parts of the world. This was a new land that many people were unaware about. Government felt it was the right time to get them to start becoming like every American citizenship. But, not so fast my friend. Some states tried everything they can to either block the Native Americans to vote or intimidate them from voting. They did everything from poll taxes to literary test. A few counties in South Dakota blocked Native Americans the right to vote. In 1951, three South Dakota counties appealed the 1924 law. The States 1903 law explained that in order for the Native Americans to vote, they have to denounce their heritage. This means their culture, traditions, their home territory, and their label of being a Native American (American Story, 2016). The movement for citizenship for Native Americans was due to their involvement in World War I. Over 7,000 Native Americans served in the military during that time. They also were very proficient with the animals they killed. They used the hides of the animals to make cover for the teepees. They used the hides of clothing and protect them from the elements. They made canoes as well. Some made of cedar, while some made of birch wood. One of their biggest crafts they did was basket weaving and wooden baskets (A.I.B., 2016). They were very itemized oriented with their resources. Each tribe had their specialty. Some were farmers, others were hunters.
