Specifically, a young African – American couple shows up at Angelou’s house looking for help in the Ghana community. Angelou and the couple began to dispute about how natives should view the African culture. In a simile, the couple shares to Angelou, “It’s just like Negroes. They are here, in their own place, and they don’t want us in. Just like crabs in a bucket. Pulling the other one down”(41). Surely, when one considers the remark made by the couple their comparing an African not letting an African – American into the community just like the crabs stuck in a bucket, one crab would not let the other one escape. At this time the couple and Angelou started to get annoyed with each other due to the fact their views of Africa were different. The gift of acceptance would allow the couple and Angelou to accept each other’s views of Africa and be able to work together to find away to merge into the community as one.
