Due to the fact that they had dark skin color, didn’t have blue eyes, or blonde hair. Morrison explained that in society during that time if you had dark skin color, you were right away considered ugly.Without even getting to know them personally, they were considered not beautiful because of their physical appearance. However, light color skin members, at an instant were seen as beautiful. Throughout the story, Morrison talks about the effect this had on young african american women. Young girls would grow up with the concept of not being pretty, of not being accepted or respected by society. Having most of them at a young age, praying and wishing they looked different. Being bullied by society and accuse of any harm. Compare to african-americans, the light skin color were seen as the pearl in society, so beautiful and should only have the best. In the story, Pecola breedlove is an eleven year old african american girl who considers herself ugly and believes that having blue eyes will make her beautiful. She is a symbol of the african american hatred and belief of their own ugliness. Morrison uses Claudia, an independent and strong minded nine year old who turns her hate into angriness and hatred toward the white. She fights and rebels on against the meaning beauty and the minimizing of the black community. When receiving a baby doll for christmas she dismember it, looking for the answer to her question. The baby doll was white with blue eyes, and to society it was beautiful and precious to have but she did not know understand why it was. Why not a dark skin baby was not as well. “Break off the tiny fingers, bend the flat feet, loosen the hair, twist the head around” (Morrison 21). No matter how hard she looked she couldn’t find the beauty in it. Unlike many girls, she hated the white, she didn't hate herself, and she didn’t wish to be different.If she got bullied by anyone she would not take it and keep quite but instead she would fight back. In reality, it was not the peoples fault for acting superior but instead it was the characteristics that made them beautiful and not the dark skin color
