Advantage Of NAT

What is NAT? As the number of computers connecting to the internet grew, we started to run out of IPv4 addresses because we start to expand so quickly. In addition, this is the reason why Network Address Translation or NAT technology was developed in order to prevent the quick reduction of IPv4 addresses. The development of NAT will allow routers, firewalls and servers running on network operating system to convert addresses between the internet (public) and private networks. This is done by configuration of routers to make sure that they drop or ignore these private IP addresses from the public internet. By doing this an organization can re-use any of the private IPv4 addresses unlike public addresses. NAT only allows for one single …show more content…
Disadvantages Just like all technology along with its advantages, there are disadvantages although not many can be said and include the following; is a technology that consumes memory resources (since all incoming and outgoing IPv4 addresses needs to be translated, it may cause delays in communication), causes loss of end device to end-device IP traceability, due to the substitution of IP addresses sometimes it may be difficult troubleshoot the network and devices or network applications may not function as anticipated because of the lack of real IP addresses (Omni Secu.com., 2015)

Table 1. Relationship between Stateless and Stateful NAT64 (Cisco, 2012) The one thing that can be said about both IPv6 and IPv4 is that they can both function together and allowing for ease of transition from one to the other or no transition and running them both side by side without having to make any changes. This would allow for any organization to smoothly transition or to run both internet protocols at the same time.
Is NAT still needed once in IPv6? The main purpose of why IPv6 was created was to restore end to end connectivity on the public internet and private connected networks. And eliminated NAT, while organizations and personal users waited for the implementation of IPv6 they started adding NAT as a solution for their problems that would not be solved by IPv6 and as long as these problems are solved it will be continued to be used. Although many believe that NAT should be avoided since, it can break the connectivity between hosts. According to Johansson, this can be seen in VoIP network where phones inside the network would want to receive call from the outside gateway services. “With NAT, a lot of tools are needed and un-needed traffic is generated to be able to handle this situation. Without NAT, the solution would be simpler and much more straight-forward” (Johansson, 2011). The new version of IP would be
