Over the past few years, the number of people diagnosed with attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders has grown rapidly and is increasing. According to Stolzer (2007), by 2006, approximately 8 to 10 million American children, mainly boys, had been diagnosed with ADHD (p. 109). If left untreated, these disorders can have devastating effects on the rest of a child's life. When someone has ADD or ADHD, they can be very inattentive and restless. This can affect how they are learning and how the rest of the class is learning. According to Walters (2010), "Children behave in a different manner which includes easily distracted by sights and sounds, inability to pay attention, daydreaming and restlessness" (p. 21). Children with attention deficit disorder have difficulty paying attention, are easily distracted, impulsive, and slow to complete simple tasks. This has a dramatic impact on the way they learn. If a child cannot pay attention to what the teacher is saying or doing, the child becomes lost.
