In Oceania, telescreens prevent that true understanding of solitude. Telescreens are present in nearly all public and private places, they are large television screens that broadcast government propaganda, news and approved entertainment (CNN); the screens also double as a surveillance camera, used to spy on citizens private lives. This tactic of control can be viewed as invading personal space in order to protect and secure the citizens’ well-being, but does that make it justifiable? In today’s society, something similar is available. Security camera are available in the majority of public places and even used in homes; these cameras are in place in order to protect society, if a crime takes place, the footage can aid in the bringing down of said injustice. Much like the telescreens in Oceania, they are said to be there solely for our safety. It is chosen to ignore the underlying uses of said camera, depending on the organization, said footage can be used against a person. Newspeak is just that, a limited language where individuals’ free thought is contained. One cannot be a free thinker if the words are stripped away, to which Big Brother realized and took great advantage of. Instances such as this are topics ignored in hopes that they will never become a reality. As extreme as the case may seem, anything is possible. The alteration of Newspeak was introduced slowly over time, allowing it to go smoother rather than proposing the change to happen in one sitting. Modifications in languages naturally happen over time, as society picks and chooses what to say and what to not say. English in 2017 varies as to the English known in 1920, terms are forgotten as well as introduced. What makes Newspeak so different is the intent that Big Brother ensures of it, the intent to limit free thought.
